Questions from orchestras
What licences does a concert of game music need?
The same as any concert with music under copyright, arranged by the organiser:
- Public performance of the original music is licensed by the performing rights organisation of your country (ASCAP or BMI in the US, SGAE in Spain, SACM in Mexico, PRS in the UK, GEMA in Germany…), usually through a licence held by the venue or the organiser. Declare the repertoire with the original titles and composers.
- Performing an arrangement of a protected work may also require the rights holder’s permission, depending on the country and the work. Organisations that programme game music regularly clear this with the publisher; when in doubt, ask your performing rights organisation.
- Recording, broadcasting or selling a performance needs separate licences (mechanical, synchronisation) from the rights holders.
When an orchestra commissions an arrangement from VGOScore, it receives everything needed for the declaration: titles, original composers, durations and arranger credit.
What exactly do I receive?
Print-ready performance materials: a conductor’s score and individual parts, engraved to professional standards with rehearsal marks, cues and page turns checked. On request, a mock-up audio for rehearsals.
Can you write it for our instrumentation?
Yes, this is one of the most common requests: no harp, one oboe, three flutes, extra saxophones, a choir, a younger string section… The music is re-orchestrated for the players you actually have, not just with instruments removed.
How long does it take?
It depends on the length and complexity of the music. The delivery date is fixed in the quote and planned around your rehearsal calendar, so tell us your concert date in the form.
Who takes care of the licences?
Your organisation, as with any concert: we write the arrangement for your performances, and the performance licence is handled by the venue or the organiser. The conditions for commissions are in the terms of use.
How do payments work?
You receive a written quote with the price, the delivery date and the payment terms before any work starts. If your organisation prefers a marketplace with buyer protection, the project can also be ordered through Fiverr.
